There are many walks that we love in and around Hertfordshire, but here are a selection of our favourites in no particular order. Its a popular place to walk where you can enjoy woodland paths, play areas and a relaxing stroll along the canal. Upper Lea Valley walk starts near the Luton Airport Parkway by the A1081 and stretches for about 5 miles to Wheathampstead. The walk is a simple loop with some open countryside, a bit of woodland walking, a visit to the pretty church at the start point and a nice pub for lunch towards the end of the walk. Ashridge Estate is a 2,000 hectare (5,000 acres) area of the Chiltern Hills with beech and oak woodlands, commons and chalk downlands. Ashridge is a very popular place for families to go walking. There's a short stretch of walking alongside a busy road to get to the start of the loop, but it's on a solid footpath and it's worth the effort as you soon emerge out into the estate for a beautiful loop of walking through the wonderful and peaceful landscape. are welcome on any of over 670 Health Walks across Scotland. This version enjoys everything from the other walks, but also heads further south to walk around another of the Willow Lakes and also passes the entrance to the Willows Activity Farm. There are no facilities at Panshanger Park. Refreshments: The Tilbury, Datchworth Green The Plough, Datchworth Green, Hertfordshire, Datchworth Green3 milesThe second route option is basically much the same as the first walk with some open countryside, the church and stroll through Datchworth Green with it's lovely pubs. Then, perhaps the best part of this walk, is the fact that you'll be able to enjoy one of our favourite Hertfordshire Pubs, The Fox and Duck, after your walk. You can park on the side of the road here or try the Hexton Road car park (SG5 3BP) which has space for about 4 cars. - from the National Trust website. Where to park: Thieves Lane car park, postcode SG14 2WN there is a charge for the car park but please check as this is new and changeable. The extra distance takes you through some more arable farmland and walks along part of the Hertfordshire Way, so it doesn't add much variety. Contact details in leaflets may be out of date. Refreshments: The Old George, Ickleford The Plume of Feathers, Ickleford, Hertfordshire, Ickleford5 milesThis third route option is the ultimate adventure in the pretty countryside around Ickleford. NEW: Our latest walk. Refreshments: The Hollybush, Redbourn, Hertfordshire. A great challenge for kids is to track down the ancient oak tree at Panshanger. It visits the small village of Green End before taking on a stroll along the Chain Walk. The tree sits on top of a slope and has exposed roots creating a magnificent natural climbing frame you can clamber over the roots or hide in the cave-like space beneath them. Refreshments: The Bull Inn, Much Hadham, Hertfordshire, Much Hadham4.75 milesThis second longer route option is a lovely walking loop in the countryside to the south of Much Hadham. Refreshments: The Boot, Kimpton The Bright Star, Peter's Green, Kimpton9.5 milesThis final route option is basically a grand and epic adventure in the Hertfordshire countryside around the village of Kimpton. Type Hilly Flat Beach . Refreshments: The Fox & Duck, Therfield, Therfield4 milesThe second route option is basically a simple extension to the first walk route that explores the countryside to the south of the village of Therfield. Paths linking the hides are generally flat with some grass areas, Some parts of the paths are narrow, but passing places are provided. Ardgillan Castle Walk. Refreshments: The Rose & Crown, Tewin, Tewin2 milesThis third option is another short loop and this one explores the countryside to the south of the village. Let me know in the comments below. Our buggy is good off road but will only got through the larger round kissing gates (not the old wood type). You'll then climb again back up into the countryside to the north of the village to visit the All Saints church before descending back down the hill towards your post-walk reward at the pub marked on the map. Like the first two routes, the walk enjoys the countryside around the village and takes you on a loop around the wonderful Icklefield Common with it's stretch of River Purwell walking. Refreshments: The Wilbury, Letchworth, Hertfordshire, Wilbury Hill3.25 milesThis second route option is basically an extension to the first route that still enjoys the wonderful downhill walk past the Lavender Farm. Refreshments: Rose & Crown, Essendon Five Horseshoes, Little Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, Essendon4.5 milesThis final route option is basically the first two routes merged to create a slightly longer adventure that enjoys more of the countryside beyond Essendon Golf course. Refreshments: The Greyhound Inn, Aldbury, Aldbury3.5 milesThis second route option is the choice for you if you don't want to tackle the climb up into the Ashridge Estate. Digswell4 milesThis second route option is basically an extension to the first route that still enjoys the viaduct, pretty bridge and calorie burning climb up the hill. We love this very fitting short quote Not all classrooms have four walls. Pathways - smooth and flat tracks, to rougher routes and sloping natural terrain. This woodland near Welwyn Garden City is a really fun place for families. Theres enough variety to keep reluctant kids engaged spring and summer offer impressive wild flower displays and theres brilliant paddling in the River Beane. The area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Local Nature Reserve. If you walk to the Wheathampstead end on a weekend morning, you must make time for a truly delicious breakfast or brunch at the Willow Trees Caf at Croft Farm. Refreshments: The Fox & Duck, Buntingford The Black Bull, Buntingford The Jolly Sailors, Buntingford, Buntingford3.25 milesThis is another relatively short walk from the market town of Buntingford in Hertfordshire. Refreshments: The Chequers Inn, Wareside The White Horse, Wareside, Wareside8.75 milesThis final route option is basically an epic adventure in the wonderful undulating countryside surrounding Wareside. RSPB Fairburn Ings is a nice day out for kids and a pram-friendly walk. The extension doesn't add a huge amount of variety to the first walk, as the extra distance is mainly through more peaceful open countryside, but it does add some extra walking and this will work up a bigger appetite for your return to the pub after your walk. It's a nice short stroll with sections of pretty open grassland teeming with wildlife and a section of walking alongside the River Oughton. It might not offer a lot more in terms of extra distance, but the extension adds a walk over Barrow Hill with some nice views and a stroll along the winding River Ash making it a more varied and pretty option. This option heads in the opposite direction from the first two routes, taking you on a long adventure to the north of the village. Refreshments: The Chequers Inn, Wareside The White Horse, Wareside, Hertfordshire, Wareside4.75 milesIf you have a little bit more time, then this second route option is basically an extension to the first walk in the pretty countryside to the northeast of Wareside. The extra distance however, takes you on a long walk along the Back Lane Roman track and then loops around on the Chain walk route back towards Cottered. It then heads back through various woodlands and more pretty countryside to the start point in Tewin where there is a another pub if you need more refreshments. The woods are the most beautiful bluebell woods in Hertfordshire and provide some of the best woodland walks in Hertfordshire. There is a caf (Inn on the Park) and toilets at the far end of the lake from the car park. Paths are level and low gradient ramps are provided for bridges. We have a range of walks to suit all abilities and backgrounds. To help you plan your next weekend adventure we have identified a few of the top buggy friendly walks in Northern Ireland. This route however adds some extra distance, and definitely some extra exercise, by taking you up and over the steep peaks of Warden Hill and Galley Hill about half way around the walk. There is a reasonably sized car park at Verulamium but this can get really busy at the weekend. In the summer there is a fantastic splash park and usually an ice cream truck hanging around. Apart from lovely walks and good trees for climbing, theres play equipment, Go Ape and a good caf. At number one in the UK, Somerset was found to have 119 accessible walks across the county - 43 are suitable for wheelchairs and 74 . It's a less varied walk, but great for exercise and fresh air. This is a very short family-friendly pub walk around the pretty village of Barley, Hertfordshire. Mardley Heath is great fun for cyclists little kids will enjoy exploring the many paths while big kids will LOVE the open sandy space where some industrious souls have created some bike jumps my children love racing over these. A buggy friendly route from Hertford, which was requested by a follower of Hertfordshire Walker on Twitter. Family walks make great family days out. As with all of our routes from Aldbury, there is a lovely pub in the village to enjoy! Refreshments: White Horse, Burnham Green, Hertfordshire, Essendon3 milesThis first walk is a nice short circular stroll on the public footpaths going around the Brickenden Golf course and the countryside beyond. It will still visit the church and pub in the pretty village of Barley, but it also takes you on a ramble out into the sweeping open Hertfordshire countryside to the south of the village and then back through the pretty Newsells Park. The rest of the walk is mainly made up of sweeping undulating open countryside, so it's really a walk for those of you that really want to stretch your legs. If its a hot day, theres a great little spot for a wild swim where the River Beane meets the Lea (you can find out more about wild swimming in Hertfordshire here), its quite deep there and better for older children, shallow water for paddling can be found further up stream near the tennis courts. We stopped to watch paddlers tackling the rapids at the White Water Centre there a caf here and plenty of outdoor places to sit. Hertfordshire is a lovely part of the UK with the Chiltern Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, running along the western fringes of county. The estate is brilliant for walking, cycling and horse riding. Start : Dean Village. After crossing Vicarage Lane, the path continues along the river for quite a stretch (this is the paddling area) before taking a turn to the left under a railway bridge (sometimes flooded) and then through woodland back to Vicarage Lane which leads to the car park. Theres a dedicated cycle trail which weve yet to try but we loved the walk across the fields to the ruined folly a great spot for kids to explore and let their imaginations run wild. Another great route linking two Hertfordshire towns, the Alban Way runs from St Albans to Hatfield. Of course, you'll be rewarded for your efforts with some wonderful views at times and also a perfect country pub at the end of your adventure. Refreshments: The Black Horse, Brent Pelham, Brent Pelham4.25 milesThis second route option is basically a simple extension to the first route for those of you that have a little bit more time to explore the peaceful Hertfordshire countryside around Brent Pelham. In the summer time, there is a field just opposite with the most incredible poppies. Park: Llys y Fran car park. From the church, walk up the slope and turn right onto Church Lane.
