hi the transmission will work.. there is a difference in the bell housing on the 2 years,,the 98 has a removable bell housing,,the 97 is one piece case..but,they do plug up and will work,,, if you have no od,,the problem is the 3-4 clutch discs,,this ois fairly common with the 4l60e .
